Marilyn Musgrave Co-Sponsors Marriage Amendment – Again

July 3, 2008 by Editor

Marylin MusgraveMost likely because the ban gay marriage party simply wasn’t too fun of a party, Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R – Colorado) has joined in. Sources indicate it’s because some of the others involved were a little preoccupied. David Vitter was busy with his prostitutes and Sen. Larry Craig kept having to use the restroom. That aside just look at it for what it is, time for reelection. Ooh! Now it all makes sense. The last time she brought up this issue was in 2006 when she also was up for reelection. Strange how that works.

After avoiding her once-signature issue for most of her third term in Congress, Marilyn Musgrave stepped back into the debate over gay marriage in recent weeks by signing on as a co-sponsor of constitutional amendments to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Musgrave faces what is expected to be a tough re-election challenge this year from Democrat Betsy Markey.

“Nothing’s changed,” Markey spokeswoman Anne Caprara said. “She’s made this big deal about being this new person, this new image, but we’re still back on same old issues when people are paying $4 for gas and wondering how they’re going to be paying for their grocery bill.”

The Republican from Fort Morgan has said virtually nothing publicly about gay marriage since her narrow re-election in 2006. Instead she has focused on issues closer to home, such as agriculture and securing a wilderness designation for Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as pocketbook issues like taxation and the federal budget.

Bob Duffy, chairman of the political science department at Colorado State University, speculated on a couple possible explanations for Musgrave’s decision to co-sponsor the amendments.

“One is principle, which is what her people are saying,” Duffy said. “The other is that you would only do it if you believe the benefits exceed the cost, if you concluded that the effort to rebrand her isn’t working and you need to secure her base either for fundraising or for votes.”

Here we go again, looks like it will be another failed attempt at a federal marriage ban in an attempt to get money and power.
