December 10th: Gays On Strike?

November 19, 2008 by Bryan

Call In Gay“Day Without A Gay” may not be the best name for this webroots initiative, though we sort of like this idea. On December 10, 2008, your hairstylist or interior designer (sure that’s stereotypical) may be MIA due to “calling in gay”. While again, a better name may have been better, they’re encouraging you to “call in gay” and head down to your local GLBT organization and spend the day making a difference for equality.

That’s right. Here’s info from the official “Day Without a Gay” site:

The worldwide media attention surrounding our massive grassweb efforts for gay rights has been tremendous. Join the Impact was a HUGE success and will continue to thrive because of our efforts.

We’ve reacted to anti-gay ballot initiatives in Californaia, Arizona Florida, and Arkansas with anger, with resolve, and with courage. NOW, it’s time to show America and the world how we love.

Gay people and our allies are compassionate, sensitive, caring, mobilized, and programmed for success. A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love.

On December 10, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes.

On December 10, you are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in “gay”–and donate your time to service!

Visit www.daywithoutagay.org for all the info you’ll need to ‘call in gay‘.

I actually have a little bit of a problem with this. I work for an airline, and it would cause nationwide havoc if every GLBT employee did not show up for work that day. I think what would better is if everyone that works at the airport or on the planes wore pink triangle lapel pins so the traveling public can maybe stop and think about what would have happened if they didn’t show up for work.

That’s almost the point David. Day Without A Gay is supposed to show what happens if gays were to drop out of the economy. My school friends are a little more detailed. We aren’t driving cars, taking buses, attending out classes, buying absolutely anything, and I personally am not using my cell phone or computer or anything which costs money to use.
