Eventhough I don’t live in the US (heck, I’m not even an American!!), I think Mr Obama’s presidency will be completely ground-shaking and will make history, and not just for his advocacy of Gay rights … but will definitely be a big part of it.

And at the same time, as he works towards positive change in the US, this will most definitely affect people around the world. Not only has he given hope to those who’d have never thought their dreams would be possible, but he has also given a much needed boost towards repairing the US’s image after the Bush administration tarnished it.

What about the different ten weeks make?

The LGBT community has been fed breadcrumbs over the cliff far too many times to merit the degree of trust expressed in this article. The fact that many of the comments attributed here to Obama are from the early stages of his campaign, and not from any of his inaugural speeches, are a painful reminder of just how truly invisible we have once again become. Hasn’t his alliance with Warren, and now the latest debacle with Bishop Robinson’s speech, sent up red flags to anyone? Believe me, I know it’s a very painful and disappointing reality that we were used again in a politically expedient way, then sold out, but we’ve got to face up to it and demand more. Sadly, at this juncture, I suspect that if we are given the mic at any point, it will be merely for appearance’s sake with no intention to give serious consideration to our rights or our demands for inclusion. That would take the kind of courage that politically expedient politicians simply don’t possess.
