I want to share my outrage. 102.7 WXBM out of Pensacola FL did ‘coverage’ regarding this new bill. They didn’t refer to hate crimes at all they broadcast it would protect child molesters, necrophilacs, and people who rubbed “their stuff” on strangers in public from prosecution.
The first problem with the bill is the vague language WILL allow for protection of vile people. A female friend of a friend was flashed in public. Her reaction was to hit him with her purse. Under this bill, the flasher would have committed a misdemeaner, while the victim, protecting herself would be charged with a felony.
Additionally, hate is not a crime. Is there any one who does not hate someone? Injuring someone is. If you injure or kill someone you are guilty and should be punished accordingly. The woman who kills her husband because she hates him for cheating is NO LESS guilty of wrong doing than someone who kills a person he hates for being homosexual.
Wrong is wrong and should be punished. If you kill someone, you go to jail, or are executed. In this country we used to have freedom of speech and certainly freedom of thought and emotion. Both liberties are being eroded. This bill is clearly an attempt to criminalize feelings. As a freedom-loving American, I will not allow a foot in the door. I will not support the punishment for thoughts and feelings.
Your female friend would be acting in self defense. You are incredibly misinformed. Flashers have nothing to do with this. I cannot even understand where you get that idea.
You realize as a straight, white, middle-aged and most likely Christian woman–you are already protected under the current hate crimes law multiple times.
Race. Religion — and soon sexual orientation. You must realize that sexual orientation does not simply include gay, but it includes straight.
Thoughts and feelings aren’t punished. Despite what those on the far right tell you, your pastor will not be thrown in jail for reading a passage from the Bible.
What is punished, and rightly so, are bias/hate motivated crimes. Freedom of speech is not being changed here.
Just as right-wing social conservatives spread lies about the so-called effects of gay marriages upon straight marriages, they are currently doing the same in response to the hate crimes bill. And just as the earlier hate-crimes legislation that included African Americans did not put the Ku Klux Klan and similar hate groups out of business, the revised Senate Bill will continue to allow social conservatives to spread all the homophobic hatred they desire from pulpits across the land (as long as they don’t incite their followers to murder, which, technically, might be considered a no-no). Compared to the so-called religious types, one can begrudgingly respect the Klan leaders for their lack of hypocrisy. (Jesus must be turning in his crypt.)
