Nevada: Gov. Gibbons To Veto Domestic Partnership Bill

April 15, 2009 by Bryan

In the state that continually proves their commitment to ‘traditional marriage’ with Elvis themed, 24-hour drive-thru weddings happening nearly every minute, Republican Governor Jim Gibbons has vowed to veto Domestic Partnership legislation for same-sex couples.

Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons says he would veto a pending legislative proposal aimed at giving same-sex domestic partners the rights and benefits that Nevada offers to married couples.

Asked about the measure now under consideration in the state Senate, the Republican governor says he would reject it if it reaches his desk because, “I just don’t believe in it.”

SB283 was authored by Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, an openly gay state lawmaker who says it was amended to ensure that public employers wouldn’t have be required to provide health care benefits to a staffer’s partner.

However, the bill doesn’t prohibit a public or private employer from voluntarily providing such benefits.

funny, isn’t this the same governor who is cheating on his wife and its all over the news out in vegas. If wants to repect the dignity of marriage, he should first respect the dignity of hos own marriage. Hypocrite!

    Wow… I can’t believe I can’t find an update on this issue.

If you don’t know by now, Govenor Gibbons Vetoed the Domestic Partnership Bill (legislation) in Nevada.

Here is his reason: He claims that the bill conflicts with a constitutional amendment approved by Nevada voters in 2002 that limited marriage to male/female couples.

Shaking my head here. We’re not talking about Marriage, we’re talking about Domestic Partnership. It’s all in the Semantics, I guess.

Hopefully, the state legislators can override his veto. We’ll see…

    Hopeful Nevadan

Nevada legalizes Domestic Partnerships! The bill takes effect October 1, 2009.
Thanks to all those that supported the bill and overriding the Governor’s veto!
