I have to agree that it is the our community's fault in why "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was created to begin with. As is why gay marriage is so hugely outlawed in the nation, why it took over ten years to pass that Matthew Shepard's Hate Crimes bill, why we still cannot donate blood, and why adoption is the next thing to be taken away from the gay community.

It's our fault because we simply don't show up to the things that matter the most to our community. In Arizona, for instance, we had THOUSANDS of people attend our Pride festivals, and Rainbows festivals -- where they spent money, got drunk, and claimed they had pride.

However, when our community had a lobby day, attempting to actually meet with our state representatives who make these awful laws, we praised ourselves when 70 people showed up. Our protests may attract a few hundred, but nothing in comparison to what an parade of men dressed in their underwear and booze brings.

I wonder, what shows we have pride, when we FIGHT and DEMAND our rights, or get drunk in our underwear because we're too sad we don't have them. For many in our community, we like being the victim, and so yes, being denied our basic civil rights is indeed OUR fault. No one is going to give them to us, we need to sober up and get them.

--> And I'd just like to point out I'm a 23 year old college student at Arizona State University. I have worked heavily on political campaigns here. In 2006, Arizona became (and remains) the FIRST and ONLY state ever to vote down a so-called marriage amendment. Certainly it passed in 2008, but the simple notion that we -- in a heavily conservative state -- were able to defeat such a disgusting amendment goes to show what we can do when we in fact sober up, and stop claiming a parade and rainbow flags is indeed "pride" -- real pride is standing up for what you believe in.

I agree with Brady, President Clinted did the best he could with the circumstances at hand. When faced with opposition from a veto-proof vote in Congress, the fact that he got what he did is a testimony to his political skills.

When he says we didn't deliver the votes in Congress, he's right. Sorry, but the truth hurts. We've gotten too complacent, being so certain that the course to equality is inexorable. We've forgotten the lessons of history: Berlin was the gay capital of the Western world just before Hitler came to power; Anita Briant's victories came at a time when equal rights were being granted to gays all over the country; Proposition 8 passed after California actually had marriage equality. Now, thanks to our own voter apathy, America's about to elect a whole slew of nuckle-dragging biggots to Congress. Maybe they will accomplish what Clintton worked so hard to prevent: a Constitutional ammendment against gays. Congratulations.

We've got to get back in the game.

I think Bill Clinton did what he had to do to prevent even more harm to the gay and lesbian community.
By giving in to the anti-gay movement, they would have managed to pass a constructional amendment to ban gay marriage across the country.
Yes, I was disappointed when the Don't ask Don't Tell policy went into effect, but just think we now have 6 states that allow gay marriage and many other states that allow domestic partnerships.
I don't blame President Clinton for doing what he needed to do. I also can see it from his viewpoint, where were the gays and lesbians calling their representatives and supporting President Clinton.
I am glad that we are FINALLY making progress to have full rights such as the straight citizens of the United States of America. We all should be protected by the Constitution. It was written in The Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal"
It is very scary when our country is at war, someone decided to get rid of the talented linguist who were fluent in Arabic.
I just read a message was intercepted on September,10.2001
was not translated until it was too late because nobody had the skills to translate such a simple message. Just think 9-11 could have been prevented.

I agree, Jeff. He's not blaming gay people for it, actually. He makes a very clear case for why he made the decisions he did and why he is disappointed in what came to pass. This headline is just trying to incite us to unjustified anger.

It's pretty silly to focus on Bill passing the buck on something that happened 20 years ago, when in the same breath he brazenly expressed disapproval for it, and discussed his feelings at length.

This headline could just as easily read "Bill Clinton: DODT is wrong, I never wanted it that way, it must be changed."

That is typical of you; blame the gays; you campaigned on the issue, and we voted for you, but when you could not deliver, you blame us; yes blame the gays; they are discriminated against because they are gay; they are discriminated against because they are different; they are discriminated against because they do not fight YOUR NORM; we are discriminated against because many of us are high-achievers; you are a two-faced bigot--don't blame us because you could not deliver; don't blame use because you could not fulfill your campaign commitment.

I voted for you; I would do it again; I was a big supporter of Hillary; and I would do it again; but please; do not use our civil rights as an excuse; as an escape...accept your accomplishments; but also accept your failures....Your family is the new dynasty of the democratic party. And you are doing great as a statesman.

The Kennedy's accepted their mistakes and took criticism for them; you might wish to consider the same....

Please, don't blame the gays for commitments you made and were unable to fulfill.

Respectfully,

Alex
