I think my first crush was on Little House on the Prairie

In my ongoing quest to live a life cobbled together with themes from Holly Hobbie and Little House on the Prairie, I tried my hand at making cheese this summer. Settle down. It’s not like I dug a cave in my backyard to house my smoked gouda or something. I began small. With ricotta. And tonight I tried it again. And at the same time, I had a loaf of homemade bread in the oven.

Galettes are Gloriously Great and Good for Gays

A cross between a pie, pizza and something else, a galette is the perfect, and rustic way, to cook up a tasty and simple dessert, without a lot of sugar. There’s a Pie-Off coming. And it’s going to be a face off. Or a Pie-off. Do you bake pie? Do you love pie? Then you should be there, Saturday, August 30, 3pm at Washington Park in Portland. It’s a good old fashioned Pie-baking Contest. Yes, there will be judges. Yes, there will be ribbons. And yes, there will be pie. And no, we’re not taking it all that seriously. HOWEVER, it’s the perfect opportunity to get out, meet some cool people, enjoy some tasty pie, and talk pie. And if you come, I want to hear those lesbians and pie jokes, okay? Okay.

Garden beginning to burst?

If your garden is beginning to burst with produce, or you can’t figure out what to do with all that great stuff from the farmer’s market, for god’s sake, learn how to make yourself some good pizza. It’s easy, I swear, and is perfect for experimentation, putting them together with friends, or just seeing what combinations work for you. And, it’s the perfect seasonal dish.

Summer is the perfect time to put your locality where your mouth is. Farmer’s markets, local growers and abundant produce make Portland a mecca for summer local eating. How are you eating local?

We’re eating local this summer. AdRi can’t even stop at the store on her way home to buy berries. She stops at the U-Pick and picks them herself. How local can you get?

Hunting the Perfect Summer Cocktail

Part of a series of creating tasty and gorgeous cocktails to enjoy during the sweet, sweet summer. This one is named after my partner: Sweet Adelita.

Imagine the warm breeze, bouganvilla blooms brightening the mountainside, and ranchera music serenading you, a cool refreshing bebida de jamaica in your hand, and tu amor kissing your neck. Just remove the bouganvilla reference and you have my household right now. We’re hunting the summer cocktail for you this July evening.

A classic refresca in Mexico is jamaica, a bright red tea made from the hibiscus flower. You can purchase ready-made jamaica mixes (muy popular) or the hibiscus flowers in hispanic stores. If you go the hibiscus flower route, steep them in boiled water for several hours and strain. You’ll have a gorgeous red liquid to work with. If you go with the ready-made mixes, pick one without sugar added: you won’t need it for this cocktail because we’re adding a simple syrup to the drink.

Put some Red, White and Blue in your mouth this 4th of July

I’m dreaming of paletas this 4th of July. For me, the 4th always means food in red, white and blue. Last year? Blueberry and strawberry shortcake. Year before? Patriotic Jello. This year? I’m going for a red, white and blue popsicle. And “paleta” is the spanish word for popsicle, but usually made with very little sugar, and a whole lot of fruit. Stay tuned for how this one turns out. I think it will require some patience. But is there anything more patriotic than putting some red, white and blue in your mouth on the Fourth of July? See? I didn’t think so.
