Jonathan Crutchley, co-creator of Manhunt.com stepped down as chairman of the company yesterday after a whirlwind of events that began with his maximum allowable donation to McCain.

Via Boston Herald:
“Politically, it was just off-base, with the whole feeling over here at Manhunt,” said site co-creator Larry Basile yesterday, pointing out McCain’s views against adoption by gay couples and same-sex marriage.

“Boy, was I embarrassed when I found out he gave $2,300,” said Basile, who asked Crutchley to step down after several patrons of the gay hookup site cancelled their subscriptions.

McCain’s camp seemed just as eager to distance themselves from the brief alliance. McCain spokesman Jeff Grappone didn’t return multiple phone calls on the subject, and Crutchley has apparently been informed that his $2,300 will be returned.

Crutchley said:
“He said, ‘If John is too good for my money, I’ll give it to (presumptive Democratic nominee) Barack (Obama),’ ” Basile said yesterday.

I’ll come right out and say it – I’ve never been a fan of Manhunt. Sure I’ve been in a monogamous relationship for the past three years, but even if I was single it wouldn’t be a site I’d cruise. Pun very much intended. Or maybe it’s my shared sentiment with Michael Joseph Gross’ OUT article entitled “Has Manhunt Destroyed Gay Culture?“. Manhunt simply isn’t my style. That said, it may not be your style anymore either after you read this.

Manhunt rakes in about $30 million dollars a year, or roughly $2.4 million dollars a month. Is some of that your money? If so, you may be dismayed to learn that Manhunt.com owner, Jonathan Crutchley, has contributed the maximum allowable amount ($2300) to the John McCain campaign.

Shown here:

I think that many readers will agree with me when I say – what the fuck? Now sure, politics are personal, but something inside me is enraged by the fact that the owner of a website that caters to what they boast as 1,000,000 gay men, has the audacity to contribute money to a candidate that is completely against equal treatment for the GLBT community.

To me, it would be like the NAACP making a contribution to David Duke.

One of the readers over at Towleroad wrote to Manhunt.com:

After one of our irate readers emailed Manhunt informing them that they had cancelled their account, he received the following email from the company:

***
Dear Sir,

We are always happy to hear from our members, thank you for taking the time to
express your concerns. The subject that you have brought to our attention is a personal matter and is
not representative of MANHUNT. We thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely, Team MANHUNT

Obviously, I sincerely disagree.
